Acoustic guitar duo Rodrigo y Gabriela have taken the “duo” portion of their description very literally since forming some 12 years ago. They never appeared at concerts playing with any other musicians. Now, however, the two musicians originally from Mexico City will hit the road with a backing back for the first time in their careers. The duo’s website explains the choice to bring backing band C.U.B.A. with them this time around:
Rodrigo y Gabriela are delighted to announce a full North American tour featuring Rodrigo y Gabriela and C.U.B.A. The duo will be bringing a backing band on the road for the first time in their careers in order to showcase the thrilling and dynamic collaborations featured on Area 52 in a live setting.
Area 52 is the duo’s upcoming album, and is due out later this month. It also was recorded with C.U.B.A., which is a 13-piece orchestra made up of young players from Havana. The album consists of nine tracks previously recorded by Rodrigo y Gabriela, but are reinterpreted with the orchestra. In a statement, Rodrigo explained the album title and how it related to working with C.U.B.A:
It’s an obvious reference to Area 51, it must be a fact that Area 52’s next door, right? We felt it was the right time and place to deal with unknown ways to create music. It was an opportunity to experiment and dare to do things we never believed we were gonna do… Of course, all the musicians we played with on this album could be coming from another planet. Their technique and passion is almost beyond human understanding! We feel very lucky because for us this exercise has been like a Master’s Degree for all we’ve learned from them.
The 14-date tour will begin April 3 in Seattle and continue through a May 5 concert in Austin, Texas. In between those dates, the band will play Portland, Ore.; Chicago; New York City and Boston, among other cities.
