Ephesus(Efes) is an ancient city of Turkey. Ephesus is the civilisation of western Anatolia and a paradise of Anatolia, which today forms part of the Republic of Turkey.
The name of Ephesus does not only remind the city itself, but also calls to mind Artemis, St. John and the Church of St. Mary. In ancient times, before the Ionians, it is believed that a certain goddess of abundance ruled over the land.
After the Ionians came to this city, they called the nameless goddess with the Greek name Artemis.
Ephesus was first constructed on a bay where the Kucuk Menderes river (classical Kaystros) reached the sea in western Anatolia.
The fine arts, the sciences, and philosophers such as Heraclitus and Thales, flourished and developed in lonia.
When you spend a night at Selcuk, you will not only be able to see the history and wonders of past centuries, as well as the House of the Virgin Mary.
For many years there have been two postulates put forward concerning the death and the tomb of St. Mary, among Christian communities.
1. As the historians declare, “the death is in Jerusalem”, at the place where Jesus was born, He was killed too”.
2. Again some historians affirm that “the death is in Ephesus”, so that this divine death took place in the presence of the disciple St. John, in whose care Christ’s mother was given in Ephesus.
You can get to Ephesus from two directions. The first one will take you about an hour if you travel by taxi from Izmir; Dolmuses or buses also run there regularly. Ephesus itself is 4 km. from Selcuk. You can find transport from Selcuk at any time.
And the other one is Kusadasi : Most of the tourists coming by ship to Turkey in order to visit Ephesus, first call at Kusadasi, a pleasant resort town on the shores of the Aegean.
It is 6 km. from the Aegean Sea, 225 km. from Denizli (Hierapolis), 510 km. from Antalya, 55 km. from Aydin, 205 km. from Marmaris and 180 km. from Bodrum It is near the historical town of Selcuk (Seljuk), between the cities of Aydin and Izmir (Smyrna).
