Ephesus Ancient Site
Ephesus is also one of the Seven Churches of Revelation in the Bible and considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Be sure to see the Grand Theater, Library and the excavated houses in this beautiful city.

House of the Virgin Mary
On Bulbul Dag (Nightingale Mountain) you will find the House of the Virgin Mary where it is believed that she spent the last years of her life. The House of the Virgin Mary is recognized as a shrine by the Vatican.

Ephesus Archeology Museum
The Ephesus Archeology Museum is only a few kilometers from Ephesus. Almost all of the exhibits are findings from Ephesus, the most spectacular being two life-size statutes of Artemis Ephesia, both of them dating from the middle Roman imperial era.

sirince+wine Tour Turkey: What to See When You Travel to Ephesus

Sirince Village

If you have a half a day’s time, this charming Orthodox village is a perfect mixture of Turkish and Greek culture from the 1920s.  This village was once called Cirkince or “Ugly” in Turkish to deter foreigners from travelling there. Sirince is set up on a hill where you can see amazing views of the wine vineyards and peach trees that surround the area. You will see a restored Orthodox Church, women selling handcrafts, olive oil and Sirince Wine.

7 Churches of Revelation
The seven churches are all located in Turkey and mentioned in The New Testament book of Revelation. You can take several days to visit Pergamos, Thyatira, Sardis, Smyrna, Philadelphia, Ephesus and Laodicea by car or by bus. At some of the sites, there is not much to see, but many travelers want the experience of visiting all 7 churches mentioned in the Bible. When planning a trip of the seven churches, check out Dr. Mark Wilson’s book, Biblical Anatolia for information and history about each site.

Pamukkale by bezimiennakrk Tour Turkey: What to See When You Travel to Ephesus

Pammukkale
Take a day trip from the Ephesus area to Pammukkale, which means cotton castle in Turkish. This city has hot springs and has terraces of white minerals left by flowing water. Many pictures show people walking and sitting in the pools, but that entering the pools is no longer allowed so that they can be preserved for many years to come. You can also explore the ruins of the ancient city of Hieropolis that is onsite.

This list is by no means comprehensive but its a good start to seeing some of the most important sites around Ephesus.

Here are our recommendations for Hotels in the Ephesus Area.

A short trip in from the Aegean Sea and we find ourselves walking through the ancient cities of Ephesus – enjoying the warm summer weather and the interesting historical facts being shared by one of Dos Plumas’ highly qualified tour guides. The site of the famous Celsius Library or the impressive amphitheater facing what used to be the delta of the Meander River. Over time the river delta silted up and now the theater view of the coast is at a greater distance. For an extra 15 TL one can view the most intricately excavated portion of the site – the residential area of ancient Ephesus being excavated by the Austrian Archaeological Institute. One room has had the marble surfacing on the walls and floors put back together after it had been broken into hundreds of thousands of fragments.

Aphrodisias02 Tour Turkey: Ephesus: Aphrodisias & Pamukkale

If you’re staying in Turkey for more than  an afternoon you will likely be asking, “What next?” The answer is just a short drive inland through the beautiful countryside to the heart of the Anatolian Peninsula. The sites of Aphrodisias and Pamukkale are some of the most popular and beautiful spots in Turkey. Aphrodisias is another beautiful site for the history buff looking to see something off the beaten path. The temple to Aphrodite and the hippodrome in Aphrodisias are two of the main attractions and the general natural beauty of a site sitting in the foothills of the Taurus Mountain Range make Aphrodisias a nice stop over point for someone looking for a bit more on their trip Eastward from Ephesus.

Pamukkale+02 Tour Turkey: Ephesus: Aphrodisias & PamukkalePamukkale+01 Tour Turkey: Ephesus: Aphrodisias & PamukkaleUNESCO has dubbed Pamukkale a world heritage site and Turkey has made great strides in protecting this natural beauty for generations to come. The white mineral formations that have accumulated over centuries of natural mineral springs flowing out from the ground in Hieropolis have created a stunning white scene. The name of this location comes from the Turkish word pamuk – cotton, and kale – castle walls. With this understanding one has a clearer picture of what they will experience in their time near and around Pamukkale. This location has been a pilgrimage location for those seeking holistic and alternative remedies for all kinds of ailments for over two thousand years.

If you are interested in archeology, then you already have Ephesus on your list of things to see. After visiting Ephesus, head over to the Ephesus Archeological Museum to see many of the most important and well preserved artifacts uncovered at Ephesus, Temple of Artemis and many other ancient cities in the area.
Statue+of+Goddess+Artemis Tour Turkey: Ephesus Archeological Museum
Statue of the Goddess Artemis at the Ephesus Archeological Museum
In the early days of excavation artifacts were taken to the British Museum and to the Ephesus Museum in Vienna. Later Turkey outlawed taking archeological artifacts out of the country, so you will find all of the discoveries since 1924 in the museum located in Selcuk, about a 70km drive from Izmir.
It doesn’t take long to go through the small museum, but the artifacts they have there are well worth the visit. After visiting the museum, you can visit the Isa Bey Mosque and St John Basicalla that are close by.
