Fox has officially acknowledged that both judge Nicole Scherzinger and host Steve Jones will not return for the second season of the U.S.  version of the “X Factor” next season, and it appears judge Paula Abdul will be absent from her judge’s chair, as well.

Entertainment Weekly reports that sources close to the show have confirmed the departure of all three stars, though only Scherzinger and Jones’ leaving have been confirmed by the show’s network. If all three do in fact leave, it will leave only Simon Cowell and record executive L.A. Reid as judges. Cowell  also is the executive producer of the show.

Jones announced the news on his Twitter account.

“I won’t be hosting next seasons [sic] X Factor, which is a shame but I can’t complain as I’ve had a great time, he tweeted.

While sources have been quoted by E! News as saying that it was Scherzinger’s choice to leave the show to focus on her music career, neither she nor Paula Abdul have released official statements. While the show produced decent ratings during its first season, it has been reported that neither Cowell nor Fox were happy with the numbers, particularly when compared to the exceptional ratings of the U.K. versions of the show, which began airing in 2004.

Both Scherzinger and Jones’ performances had been panned by critics of the show, and rumors that they would leave the show have been circulating for weeks, though Abdul’s departure is somewhat more shocking.

Fox entertainment president Kelly Reilly discussed Jones’ future role on the show at a press tour presentation earlier this month.

“There will be some changes,” he said. “…as we know [hosting] is a much harder job than meets the eye. I think everybody has come to see the value of Ryan Seacrest. Whether Steve is the guy or not, it comes under the heading of growth in general.”

The show is set to return to the Fox lineup for its second U.S. season this fall.
